This website focuses on three centres of fiddle playing in North-East Scotland: Fochabers, Banchory and Tarland. These three locations have been selected for study as each is home to a lively fiddle tradition at the present day and each has a historical connection with a well-known fiddler who was also a composer (see research methodology). This double focus gives the opportunity for both horizontal study in the present and vertical study relating to the period from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The fiddle is commonly played throughout the North East which, in the context of this website, is taken to consist of the counties of Moray and Aberdeenshire. Many notable fiddlers have emerged from the area, such as Charlie McKerron who plays with the group "Capercaillie".
