BANCHORYview overlooking Banchory

The town of Banchory (pop. 6160) is situated on the River Dee, eighteen miles from Aberdeen (see map of Aberdeenshire). Historically, it is home to the famous Scottish fiddler, James Scott Skinner – who has a square named after him – and, at the present day, to the Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society which was formed in 1932. The society has a large membership, and some of its members, past and and present, have won prizes for their solo fiddle playing in competitions such as the Glenfiddich Championships. A traditional music festival is held annually in Banchory in May.
